The Pow! Game

12th beat - different speeds

Finally, try to hit the 12th beat, with beats 5 to 11 missing. At a middle speed, then faster, then slower:

If you're always in time with the last example, you're pretty good!

Does practice improve your sense of rhythm? To be honest I don't know. It must help to be aware of how difficult it is to keep a rhythm going. Concentration is a big factor as well.

Here, you've only had four beats to establish the rhythm. That makes it harder - if the rhythm had been established for longer, say 12 beats, you might have had a better chance. On the other hand, having just 4 beats makes you concentrate more!

That's the end of this brief look at the Pow! Game - except to point out that you can do this in a chorus setting, with one person out front setting the rhythm by clicking fingers, then everyone, with eyes closed, trying to say "Pow!" at the right time. Potentially chaotic... Who will go for it and who will chicken out?... Have fun.
